Eden toyed with the glass in her hand and stared out the sitting room window at the winter gloom hovering over the area today. She should be getting ready for work but she lacked the motivation. Winter in Mississippi was always a roller-coaster ride. She was glad the winters were short, barely two months. But just when you got used to the temperate days, the chill factor would return and plunge everything into the cold. It made for a constant change of wardrobe from day to day.

“Eden.” Jackie walked toward her. “I forgot to tell you Owen’s doctor’s appointment was changed, and we have to be there at four this afternoon. So you’ll have to take Lucy to dance class.”

“All right. I’m sure I can get away a little early.”

The older woman placed a hand on her shoulder. “You feeling any better about Blake?”

She nodded. “I still have to apologize. I’m just waiting for the right moment.”

“Uh-huh. Take it from me, right moments rarely materialize. Just walk up to him and say you’re sorry.”

Eden wished it was that simple. Her visit to the bridge the other day hadn’t been easy, but it had given her the courage and conviction to tell Blake how sorry she was and that she didn’t really want him to leave. That had been a hard realization. She liked her brother-in-law. A lot. Too much. He was taking up space in her thoughts more and more.

Her cell phone rang, drawing her from her confused thoughts. Her boss was calling. Probably wondering why she was late for work. She should have been at the office twenty minutes ago. “Hi, Virginia. I’ll be there soon.”

“I have good news. The heirs to Beaumont have reached a consensus. They want to sell the house to us. All we need to do is agree on a price.”

Eden yelped. “Really? That’s wonderful! I can’t believe it. I’d given up hope.”

“Me, too. We have a conference call here today at four o’clock to discuss it. Don’t be late.”

“I won’t.” She ended the call and spun around with happiness. She had to tell Blake.

Grabbing a sweater, she hurried to the studio and knocked. No answer. His vehicle was parked in the drive so that meant he was working on Roxy. She hurried across the lawn and through the door of the car barn and to the back corner. He was there, bent over the motorcycle. She was always intrigued by the joy he found in the old machine.

She was suddenly tense. They hadn’t spoken since her hurtful comment. He looked up and saw her.

“Hey.” He smiled and her heart skipped a beat. It shouldn’t. Apparently, Blake didn’t hold a grudge. “How’s Roxy?”

“Coming along. You look happy. Did you get good news?”

She could barely contain her excitement. “My boss just called. We might get Beaumont after all.”

He set aside the tool he’d been holding. “That’s great news. You must be overjoyed.”

“I am.” A part of her wished there wasn’t a bike between them because she would like to have given Blake a hug.
